The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the appointment of Peter Akpe as the new deputy governor of Bayelsa State, clearing the way for his swearing-in.
Akpe, an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), previously served as chief of staff to Governor Douye Diri before his nomination for the deputy governorship. His career spans both the civil service and partisan politics, reflecting decades of public service experience.
Before fully transitioning into politics, Akpe worked in the civil services of both Rivers and Bayelsa states. He later went on to serve as a two-term member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019, where he held the position of majority leader throughout his tenure.
Between 2008 and 2011, he also served as commissioner under the administration of former Governor Seriake Dickson, further solidifying his profile within the state’s political landscape.
Akpe’s confirmation follows the death of the former deputy governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away in December. His appointment is expected to ensure continuity in governance as the Diri administration moves forward.
With legislative approval secured, attention now turns to the formal swearing-in ceremony that will officially usher Akpe into office as Bayelsa’s deputy governor.
