Bandits in an attack on Gurmana District and neighbouring villages in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State have killed at least one person and abducted 10 others.
Villages attacked by bandits include Karibo, Shekadna, Kokki, Sarkin Zama, Bakin Kogi (Lagbe), Maganda and other adjoining villages all under Gurmana District.
The District Head of Sarkin Zama and several others who sustained various degrees of gunshot injury during the attack are currently on admission responding to treatment at various health facilities in Kuta, the headquarters of Shiroro Local Government Area.
It was reported that the bandits razed houses and barns in the communities.
Sources that spoke with DailyTrust noted that the bandits stormed the communities in large numbers on motorcycles, shooting sporadically in the process.
Some of the residents disclosed that the armed bandits have developed a new operational model which includes barricading roads and laying ambush for road users who occasionally go to their homes to fetch some foodstuffs for their upkeep.
The co-convener of the Shiroro Youths Association, Yusuf Abubakar Kokki, who confirmed the incident, called for urgent and concerted efforts by the government and individuals to address the insecurity challenge in the council.
