The Theatre Commander of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has dismissed reports claiming that Boko Haram insurgents invaded the Kirawa community in Borno State last Saturday.
Abubakar clarified that the attack, which NewsCentral TV first reported, actually occurred in the Kirawa community in the Republic of Cameroon, not in Nigeria.
Naija News understands that there had been earlier reports that Boko Haram insurgents reportedly killed at least two soldiers in an attack on a military base in Borno State.
The report claimed that the fighters during the raid set armoured tanks ablaze and carted away an unspecified quantity of ammunition.
Kirawa in Borno shares an international border with another community of the same name in Cameroon. The OPHK commander explained that it was the Cameroonian side that came under attack, with Cameroonian soldiers, not Nigerian troops, involved in the incident.
“It’s the Cameroonian Base in Kirawa that was attacked, not Nigerian troops,” General Abubakar told Vanguard in a text message on Monday.
The commander also shared videos and photographs from the scene, which showed operational vehicles belonging to Cameroonian forces that had been destroyed.
Abubakar advised journalists to always confirm details of any alleged attack with military authorities before publishing, warning against the publication of misleading reports.
