Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has reacted to the return of troops of the Nigerian Army to correctional centres in the state.
Naija News recalls that the governor had condemned the withdrawal of the soldiers from the prison facilities in the state, saying that the action could encourage jailbreaks.
Following the withdrawal, Akeredolu deployed police, Amotekun corps and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to guard the prisons in the state.
Days after condemning the withdrawal, Governor Akeredolu has now welcomed the return of soldiers in a statement on Saturday signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde.
Akeredolu commended the Nigerian Army for allowing the soldiers to return to the facilities, adding that the security of lives and property of the people remains his government’s priority.
The statement reads: “We note the return of soldiers to the correctional centres as concerting. The security of lives and property of our people remains an onerous task that must be carried out without hesitation or sentiment.
“A federal facility like the correctional centre should not have been left without deserving security for any reason. However, the return of the soldiers to the facilities is a positive development.
“Both the Nigerian Army and the correctional centres belong to the Federal Government. There must be continuous synergy. We will also continue to do our best to give the necessary support when the need arises.”
