Super Falcons players, Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and defender Ashleigh Plumptre, have been named in the Group Stage Best XI at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Plumptre, who started Super Falcons’ opening matches against Tunisia and Botswana, impressed with her defensive composure and ability to read the game under pressure.
Meanwhile, Ajibade featured in every minute of Nigeria’s group stage campaign, driving the team forward from midfield.
Ajibade’s influence was particularly evident in Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 win over Botswana, where her leadership and all-around performance earned her the Woman of the Match award.
With three solid group stage performances under their belt, the Super Falcons are now set to face Zambia’s Copper Queens in a high-stakes quarter-final tie on Friday at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. Nigerian time.
But Zambia are not coming quietly. The Southern African side, who stunned Nigeria 1-0 in their last WAFCON meeting, a third-place match in 2022, are buzzing with confidence after finishing their group with two wins and a draw.
“We are not scared of any team, we can’t be afraid of Nigeria, all we need to do is play to our coach’s instructions,” Zambian midfielder Rachael Nachula told Brila FM ahead of the match.
