Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has called on community development unions in the state to ensure that only credible and upright individuals are elected into leadership positions.
Otti, who expressed concern over the calibre of persons occupying such offices in some communities, insisted that his administration would not tolerate leaders with questionable character.
“We don’t want thieves. We don’t want drug dealers, and we don’t want 419 people as leaders of town unions. Because if your leader is a thief, he will teach people to steal. If he is a drug addict, if you arrest somebody, he would want to bribe you to release him,” the governor warned.
Naija News reports that the Otti made the remarks on Wednesday when he received members of the Abia State Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASAITU), led by its President-General, George Mgbeorurukwe, at Government House, Umuahia.
Otti stressed that his administration is always keen on knowing the leadership structure of town unions to guarantee integrity and accountability.
He charged the union leaders to return to their communities and ensure that credible leadership is instituted.
“Go back and make sure the leadership produced in communities are people the people will be proud of,” Otti said.
He also urged them to work closely with government and security agencies by providing credible intelligence to help curb criminality in rural areas.
During the visit, the governor approved the union’s request for a parcel of land to build its state office, assuring them of his continued support.
