Abia State will host the 2025 edition of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Women’s Championship from September 11 to 21, the league has confirmed.

The NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, announced the plans for the women’s championship via a press statement on Monday, August 18.

She revealed that 17 clubs have officially registered for the tournament, which will see teams drawn into four groups ahead of the kick-off.

“The Championship serves as a critical pathway for clubs aiming to secure promotion to the top tier of Nigerian women’s football,” Shabi said. “This year, four promotion slots are up for grabs for the 2025/2026 season.”

The second-tier league is designed to identify and nurture emerging talent, providing a platform for young players and ambitious clubs to showcase their skills. Clubs that perform well in the Championship earn the opportunity to compete in the NWFL, Nigeria’s premier women’s football competition.

Football fans across the country are already anticipating an exciting tournament, as the Championship promises intense competition and the chance to witness future stars in action.

The 10-day event is expected to boost local engagement with women’s football and spotlight the sport’s growing popularity nationwide.

The tournament will mark the first NWFL competition since Bayelsa Queens were crowned champions of the 2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership in May 2025.
