Google is altering how primary and secondary schools access its ecosystem, giving school administrators an all-or-nothing choice regarding artificial intelligence.

The company is introducing new administrative controls to manage A.I. tools in classrooms.

However, institutions that opt to block A.I. completely will lose access to Google’s web search engine on managed student accounts.

Google’s message to school management: You cannot have your Search and eat it, too.

Deep Infrastructure Integration

Under the revised framework, Google will default to disabling Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and other generative A.I. services on primary and secondary student accounts (K–12, corresponding to Nursery or Primary 1 through SS3 / Year 13) unless school administrators manually activate them.

Because generative models are integrated directly into the infrastructure of Google’s core products, the company maintains that the services cannot be separated.

School management teams that choose to turn off A.I. capabilities will automatically cut off students’ access to standard web searches via their institutional accounts.

In an interview with The New York Times, Google’s Vice President and General Manager of Education, Chris Phillips, explained the structural dependency:

“Search and A.I. are deeply integrated,” Phillips said. If a school opts out of Google’s A.I., students “will not have access to search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not available.”

The policy shift addresses growing debates among school proprietors, administrators, and parents regarding the impact of generative text tools on academic integrity, critical thinking, and exam preparation (such as WAEC, NECO, or IGCSE coursework).

To counter complete bans, Google is promoting a feature called Guided Learning across Google Search and Google Classroom. Rather than outputting complete solutions or pre-written answers, Guided Learning uses step-by-step prompts to assist students in working through academic problems independently.

Implications For School Administration

Primary and secondary schools that rely heavily on Google Workspace for Education and Chromebooks face a direct technical decision. School boards and administrators must either approve the inclusion of generative A.I. tools on student profiles or reconfigure their IT infrastructure to deploy alternative search engines across student devices.
