NDC’s Southern Ticket Plan Signals Possible One-Term Presidency In 2027

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the South, while reserving the 2031 slot for the North, a move that could imply a one-term presidency if a southern candidate emerges victorious in 2027.

The decision was adopted at the party’s national convention on Saturday after a motion moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.

The convention also ratified all members of the party’s National Executive Committee following a motion moved by Victor Umeh, senator representing Anambra Central.

The zoning arrangement effectively means that if a southern candidate wins the presidency on the NDC platform in 2027, the party is expected to return its presidential ticket to the North in 2031, suggesting a possible single-term presidency under the arrangement.

Earlier in the week, Buba Galadima, an ally of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, confirmed that the party had settled for a southern presidential candidate.

“We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the south. No missing votes. We’ve zoned it to the south,” Galadima said.

He added that the NDC would conduct presidential primaries instead of adopting a consensus arrangement.

The development comes amid wider opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 elections and aligns with calls for power rotation and equity championed by Peter Obi and other opposition leaders.
