The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is making substantial progress in expanding energy access across Nigeria, with multiple initiatives targeting underserved rural and peri-urban communities, as well as key public sectors.
According to the Managing Director Abba Abubakar Aliyu, the agency is implementing 12 ongoing projects with diverse strategic objectives.
These efforts focus on improving electricity reliability and reaching last-mile communities, particularly in critical areas such as health, education, and agriculture.
The flagship initiative is the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES or DES scale-up) project—a $750 million publicly funded program, described as one of the world’s largest renewable energy efforts of its kind.
It aims to provide electricity to 17.5 million Nigerians by deploying 1,350 mini-grids (including 250 interconnected ones) and over 1 million solar home systems (SHS).
