Former Anambra governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reportedly survived an alleged assassination attempt in Benin, the capital of Edo State, after armed men opened fire on members of his Obidient movement.

The incident allegedly occurred during the formal defection of former governorship candidate Olumide Akpata to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). According to a statement signed by Tanko and titled “Breaking: Red Alert in Benin, Edo State,” armed individuals reportedly trailed Obi and ADC leaders from the party’s secretariat to the residence of former national chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun.

The statement claims the attackers shot at the gate and damaged several vehicles in what was described as an apparent assassination attempt, raising fresh concerns about political tensions and security in the state.

As of press time, security agencies have not issued official confirmation regarding the alleged attack.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, had earlier warned that Obi must obtain security clearance before visiting the state. The governor’s remarks followed Obi’s recent visit to Benin, where he donated ₦15 million to St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences.

It remains unclear whether Obi secured formal clearance before the latest visit, as political stakeholders continue to react to the unfolding developments.
