Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), and legal scholar, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, over their opposition to his speculated 2027 presidential ambition.
Jonathan, through his cousin, Azibaola Robert, warned the duo to stay away from his political decisions, stressing that his eligibility to contest was not in doubt.
Naija News reports that Keyamo and Odinkalu had advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against offering Jonathan its ticket, arguing that he had already been sworn in twice as president and could face constitutional hurdles.
They contended that any return bid might not withstand legal scrutiny.
GEJ 100% Qualified – Robert
Responding in a statement on Monday, Robert dismissed their concerns, insisting Jonathan does not need unsolicited legal opinions.
“Dear Festus Keyamo (SAN), Chidi Odinkalu (Prof.), I greet both of you. For the records, three of us are lawyers. We were all pro-democracy activists in the 90s, and I was a better activist than both of you combined.
“Rule No. 1: Do not offer legal advice where none is solicited. GEJ (PDP) has numerous, more cerebral, more experienced SANs at his disposal who give him sound, unblemished professional legal advice.
“Please note: GEJ is 100% constitutionally and legally qualified to contest, if he chooses to. If he decides not to yield to the overwhelming calls to run, it will not be because he is unqualified,” he wrote on his verified Facebook page.
Jonathan Not Bothered By Your Unsolicited Legal View – Robert To Keyamo
Robert further suggested that existing court rulings had already settled the matter of Jonathan’s eligibility.
“Your unsolicited legal view is not of any concern to him and will never be. Don’t waste your precious time dwelling on this. Or should I schedule a meeting so you can be properly educated on the subsisting court judgments on the matter, one of which your party, APC, was a party to?” he added.
While insisting Jonathan is constitutionally cleared to run, Robert stressed that his comments should not be seen as a confirmation of his brother’s ambition.
“This is not a confirmation that GEJ is running, though,” he noted.
Naija News reports that although Jonathan has not formally declared for the 2027 race, his rumoured ambition has triggered heated debates within political circles.
Some argue that a Jonathan return bid could complicate the South’s chances of retaining the presidency, while others insist it may offer the PDP a stronger platform ahead of the elections.
For now, uncertainty remains, but the early exchanges highlight the growing battle over zoning, eligibility, and succession as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
