World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, has pulled out of the 2025 Diamond League final in Zurich, handing her slot to Bahamian athlete Devynne Charlton.
The competition, which began on Wednesday and concludes today, August 28, brings together some of the world’s finest athletes, all eyeing the $50,000 prize in their respective events.
Amusan qualified for the grand finale as the second-ranked athlete this season with 27 points and also holds the meet record of 12.29s, set in 2022 when she clinched her second Diamond League crown. The Nigerian star, 28, is also a three-time champion, having won back-to-back titles in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Her withdrawal comes after a disappointing outing at the Lausanne Diamond League last week, where she stumbled at the opening hurdle and finished fifth with a time of 12.82s. The decision may be part of her recovery plan ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo next month.
The women’s hurdles field in Zurich now features Charlton, reigning world champion Danielle Williams, Ackera Nugent, Nadine Visser, Ditaji Kambundji, Selina von Jackowski, and the American trio of Tonea Marshall, Grace Stark, and Kendra Harrison.
In related developments, Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili, who has reportedly switched allegiance to Turkey, has been disqualified from the women’s 200m event despite meeting the qualification standard.
Meanwhile, African 400m hurdles record holder Ezekiel Nathaniel remains in contention after being listed for the men’s 400m hurdles final.
The Nigerian recently claimed his first professional win at the Lausanne meet, clocking 48.08s. Rising star Udodi Onwuzurike is also set to feature in the men’s 200m final, continuing his Diamond League journey after making his debut last week.
