It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Nigerian footballers across Europe, with Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen all making their mark with decisive contributions for their clubs.
At Craven Cottage, Alex Iwobi once again proved why he has become Fulham’s creative heartbeat. The Super Eagles midfielder delivered the assist for Emile Smith Rowe’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United.
Iwobi, who is one of the few Nigerian footballers who played full 90 minutes in Europe last weekend, was a constant attacking threat, registering three shots and driving Fulham’s forward play.
Since the start of last season, the 28-year-old has been directly involved in 16 league goals, more than any other Fulham player, with nine goals and seven assists.
While his compatriot Calvin Bassey did not get on the scoresheet, his defensive display meant the Nigerian duo continued their trend of being pivotal whenever Fulham find the net against United.
Remarkably, all four of the Cottagers’ goals in their last five meetings with the Red Devils have involved either Iwobi or Bassey.
In Turkey, Victor Osimhen opened his league account for Galatasaray in dramatic fashion. The former CAF African Footballer of the Year struck in the 86th minute, converting a cross from Italian winger Nicolo Zaniolo to seal a 1-0 away win over Kayserispor.
The Nigerian forward, who played the entire match, fired six shots and showed glimpses of the clinical finishing that made him one of Europe’s most feared strikers during his spell at Napoli.
Elsewhere in Portugal, Zaidu Sanusi added to his growing influence at FC Porto by delivering an assist earlier in the season and making another appearance in the club’s emphatic 4-0 win against Casa Pia.
Although the Nigerian full-back did not register a goal involvement in Sunday’s clash, his previous assist against Gil Vicente ensured his name remains on Porto’s list of contributors this term.
