The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mathew Dogara Daje, winner of the bye-election held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in Munya Constituency of Niger State.
Daje defeated his closest rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Hon. Sabo Sunday Adabyinlo, with a margin of over 6,000 votes. The election was conducted to fill the vacant seat left by the death of Hon. Joseph Haruna Duza of the PDP in the Niger State House of Assembly.
INEC confirmed that three political parties, the APC, PDP, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), participated in the contest.
Accreditation and voting began promptly at 8:30 a.m. in most polling units, with voters turning out early to exercise their civic responsibility. Despite the presence of heavy security personnel, with some locations having up to 30 uniformed officers, the process was largely peaceful.
Reports indicated that while some polling units recorded large turnouts, others experienced low participation. INEC also confirmed the relocation of polling units in Kuchi, Beni, Dangunu, Kabila, and Kazai electoral wards due to security concerns.
Voting officially closed at 3:30 p.m., but officials ensured that all voters already in line were allowed to cast their ballots in compliance with electoral guidelines.
Meanwhile, the PDP candidate, Hon. Adabyinlo, rejected the poll’s outcome, alleging that state resources were deployed to manipulate the election in favour of the APC. He also accused the ruling party of engaging in vote-buying and intimidating voters.
In his acceptance speech, APC’s Mathew Dogara Daje thanked Governor Umaru Bago and the APC family across Munya Local Government for their support.
