The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) winner of the Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election held on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
Nwachukwu secured 90,408 votes, defeating Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 19,812 votes, and Donald Amamgbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who polled 2,889 votes.
The election, contested by 16 political parties, was conducted to fill the vacant seat left by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who was first elected in 2019 under the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and re-elected in 2023, defected to the APC before his sudden death in 2024.
Nwachukwu, a former President-General of Ukpor, will become the first politician from Nnewi South Local Government Area to represent Anambra South in the Senate once sworn in.
In a separate contest, Barrister Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe, from the prominent Ikpeazu family in Onitsha, emerged victorious in the Onitsha North I State Constituency bye-election.
Announcing the result, INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Ibiam Ekpe of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, said Azikiwe scored 7,774 votes, defeating Mrs. Justina Azuka of the ADC, who garnered 1,909 votes.
Azuka, the widow of the slain lawmaker who previously represented the constituency, lost despite sympathy from sections of the electorate. The late lawmaker was kidnapped on Christmas Eve 2024, with his body later found near the Second Niger Bridge on February 6, 2025.
Other candidates, Mr. Ezennia Chuka Ojekwe of the APC and Ms. Njideka Ndiwe of the YPP, scored 1,371 and 655 votes, respectively.
