The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hyacinth Dajoh, has dismissed insinuations that lawmakers are working against the state government, insisting they remain committed to supporting the executive for the overall good of the state.
Naija News reports that Dajoh’s remarks come amid recent tension between the legislature and the executive arm.
The Assembly had resolved not to honour correspondence from the executive until its demands were met, accusing the government of “flagrantly refusing to obey the Assembly’s resolutions”.
This stance also led to the lawmakers declining to screen commissioner nominees.
Speaking, however, in Makurdi at the inauguration of a new executive and appeal fund for the Association of Emcees (ABE), Benue Chapter, the Speaker, represented by Douglas Akya (Makurdi South), said the legislature’s actions were guided by responsible representation.
“Whatever decision the assembly takes is not that we are fighting the governor or the executive. What we are doing is to support the governor to succeed and leave lasting legacies. All we do and say is to support him. We are not fighting; we are not saboteurs,” he said.
Dajoh commended ABE for electing credible leaders to steer the affairs of the association.
He promised to furnish the association’s secretariat once it is ready for use.
The Minority Chief Whip, Cephas Dyako, who chaired the occasion, applauded ABE members for uniting under one umbrella to coordinate their activities and pledged support to help them achieve their goals.
The Speaker’s wife, Mrs Cynthia Dajoh, also lauded the group’s professionalism and unity.
Guest speaker Chief Solomon Iorpev, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, delivered a lecture on “Building a Successful Brand as an MC”. He shared tips on mastering ceremony duties and urged members to strictly adhere to professional protocols.
The newly inaugurated ABE Speaker, Terver Adom, commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for what he described as unprecedented development in the state over the last two years.
“The governor is gradually changing the narratives of Benue,” Adom said.
