FC Barcelona have confirmed that goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has been officially reinstated as captain of the first team, following the closure of a recent disciplinary case against him.
Naija News reports that FC Barcelona stripped the captaincy armband from ter Stegen after announcing his likely return to football on Instagram, but also failed to forward his medical report, linked to his recent surgery, to La Liga.
In a statement released on Friday, the Catalan club announced that Ter Stegen had signed the necessary authorisation allowing the club to forward his medical report to the league body. The move brought the dispute to an end.
“The Club announces that the player Marc-André ter Stegen has signed the authorisation necessary for the Club to send La Liga the medical report relating to his surgery,” Barcelona’s statement reads.
With the paperwork completed, the German international can now resume his leadership duties within the squad.
“The disciplinary case has been closed and the player is captain of the first team once again with immediate effect,” the statement added.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who joined Barcelona from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, has been a pivotal figure for the club both on and off the pitch.
His reinstatement comes as a major boost for coach Hansi Flick’s side, as they prepare for a critical run of fixtures in their La Liga and Champions League campaigns.
Ter Stegen is expected to return to full action once his recovery from surgery is complete. He is likely to be available for selection in the third month of the forthcoming season.
