Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison is expected to miss most of the upcoming season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
According to BBC Sport, James Maddison sustained the injury during Spurs’ pre-season draw against Newcastle United in South Korea last weekend.
The 28-year-old is set to undergo surgery and will be out for an extended period as he begins a long-term recovery programme.
Manager Thomas Frank confirmed after the match that the injury affected the same knee that had previously ruled Maddison out of the Europa League final victory against Manchester United in May 2025.
Since the squad’s return from Asia on Monday, Maddison has undergone several medical tests to determine the extent of the damage. The initial fears of an ACL injury have now been confirmed.
Maddison joined Tottenham from Leicester City in 2023 and made 45 appearances for the club last season, scoring 12 goals. He has seven caps for England, with his most recent international appearance coming in 2024.
With Maddison ruled out and captain Son Heung-min having departed for LAFC, Tottenham may be forced to enter the transfer market to strengthen their attacking options.
The club had previously targeted Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, but the move did not materialise. Mohammed Kudus, signed this summer from West Ham, could provide an alternative in a central attacking role.
