The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its seven-day warning strike, four days after it began nationwide.
Naija News reports that the Assistant Secretary-General of NANNM, Chidi Aligwe, confirmed the suspension to Saturday Punch.
On Wednesday, nurses and midwives embarked on the industrial action to push for several demands, including an upward review of shift allowance, adjustment of uniform allowance, creation of a separate salary structure for nurses, an increase in core duty allowance, mass recruitment of nurses, and the establishment of a nursing department in the Federal Ministry of Health.
However, the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, had earlier on Friday announced that NANNM had called off the strike following a closed-door meeting with union leaders in Abuja.
According to Pate, both parties reached key agreements on the issues that triggered the strike.
“The striking nurses decided to call off the strike after extensive deliberations and agreements on critical concerns raised by the association,” the minister said.
The minister assured that the government remains committed to improving the welfare and working conditions of health professionals, adding that steps would be taken to address the unresolved demands in phases.
Union leaders also indicated that they would continue to engage with the Federal Government to ensure full implementation of the agreements reached during the negotiations.
