Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala, has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting she has called time on her international career.
Naija News reports that the 30-year-old football star, who featured in Nigeria’s victorious campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), clarified her stance while speaking to journalists in Rabat, Morocco, following Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 win over host nation Morocco in the tournament’s final on Saturday night.
Reacting to the retirement rumours, the six-time African Women’s Player of the Year said the claims were completely false and unfounded.
She said, “I don’t know where that came from but agenda must agend. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on.”
Her comments put to rest recent social media speculation that she was stepping away from the national team after over a decade of service.
Oshoala, who has been part of Nigeria’s senior women’s team since 2013, has become one of the most decorated figures in African women’s football.
She shot to global prominence during the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, where she won both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball, before helping Nigeria secure the 2014 African Women’s Championship.
Since then, she has added three more WAFCON titles (2016, 2018, and now 2024) to her trophy cabinet and remains the first African player to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cups, 2015, 2019, and 2023.
