WAFCON: Tinubu Approves Full Allowances, Bonuses For Super Falcons, D’Tigress

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate and full payment of match bonuses and allowances for the Super Falcons ahead of their final showdown against Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, made the announcement on Thursday, confirming that the approved funds cover all entitlements up to and including the July 26 final.

“This is a policy in motion,” Dikko said while addressing journalists in Abuja.

“All outstanding entitlements have been disbursed for immediate payment to players, coaches, and officials.”

Naija News reports that the development marks a major shift in Nigeria’s sports administration approach, with Dikko stressing that timely payment of allowances would henceforth be the norm, not the exception.

“This is the kind of sports administration we are building, one rooted in dignity, trust, and shared prosperity,” he said.

Dikko added that under Tinubu’s leadership, athletes can now focus on representing the country with pride, knowing their welfare is a top priority.

D’Tigress

Naija News reports that Tinubu’s gesture is not limited to the Super Falcons alone, as the President also approved that Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, who are set to launch their campaign at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire, should also receive enhanced allowances and bonuses.

According to Dikko, “The same structure of support and timely remuneration has been extended to D’Tigress as they prepare to fly the nation’s flag in Abidjan.”

Dikko assured that those days were over, noting that President Tinubu’s approval represents a clear departure from past practices and reinforces the administration’s commitment to sports development and athlete welfare.

“Future generations will remember this as the turning point — a time when athletes were treated with respect and rewarded promptly,” he concluded.

The Super Falcons are expected to face host nation Morocco in what promises to be a thrilling WAFCON final, while D’Tigress begin their continental title defence in the coming weeks.
