Anyone That Punishes His Wife Is Not A Good Person - Emir Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has strongly condemned the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) in Kano State, warning that no good man raises a hand against his wife.

Speaking during a visit by officials of the Development Research and Project Centre (dRPC) and Bayero University’s Centre for Islamic Civilisation and Interfaith Dialogue (CICID), Sanusi emphasised that domestic violence has no basis in Islam and should be rooted out through community enlightenment and legal reform.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor lamented that cases of rape and domestic violence were becoming rampant in the state and tasked Islamic clerics and community leaders with the responsibility of influencing behavioural change.

“Whosoever beats and injures his wife is not a good person,” the emir said, “It is not me saying this; it is the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who said it.

“Islam has respected and dignified women more than any other religion.

“Those who seek cover under it to abuse women do not even understand the religion,” Sanusi stated.

He noted that the mission of dRPC and CICID to engage Muslim Opinion Leaders (MOLs) was timely and critical in addressing the growing social issue in Northern Nigeria.

Calling for urgent legislative reforms, Sanusi challenged stakeholders to revive the dormant Kano State family law draft, which addresses GBV and other family-related challenges.

“All the legal frameworks we need are already in our Islamic jurisprudence books. What is needed is to bring them out and assemble them into a usable draft,” he said.

Recalling his own academic research, the emir disclosed that he had studied nine Kano Shari’a courts over five years as part of his PhD thesis on the codification of Islamic family law. He said the research revealed widespread gender violence in society.

“That is why I told all my district and village heads that anyone caught beating his wife does so at the risk of losing his title,” he warned.
