Former ministers who served under the late President, Muhammadu Buhari, gathered at the Ansar-ud-Deen Central Mosque in Abuja on Saturday for a special seven-day Fidau prayer in honour of the deceased ex-leader.
The event, which marked the end of the week-long prayer sessions, was attended by several prominent figures, including former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq; former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika; and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
Speaking after the prayer, Farouq described the gathering as one of many spiritual tributes being held across the country in memory of the late president.
She said, “This is a very important prayer. It is a seven-day prayer we are conducting this afternoon. What every Muslim and every Nigerian is expected to do is to continue to pray for him. And we will also continue to do our best to emulate him.”
She stressed that the prayer session was part of a broader national expression of gratitude and remembrance for Buhari’s lifetime of service.
Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, a Christian, stated that his presence at the event reflected his respect for Buhari.
“I decided to join the prayer despite not being a Muslim because he was a very disciplined and honest person who loved Nigeria deeply,” Amaechi said.
He added that Buhari’s leadership style left a lasting impression on him, especially in terms of integrity and sacrifice.
Senator Hadi Sirika delivered an emotional tribute, calling Buhari a leader, mentor, and man of exceptional character.
Sirika said, “He is someone whom I have learnt a lot from and I wish to copy. But I am still struggling to follow his path because he was a man of integrity and honour.
“He dedicated his life to service and served this country more than anybody else, living or dead. He was given positions of trust and never betrayed them.”
Quoting a verse from the Quran, Sirika added, “O you who believe, fear Allah and associate yourselves with those who are trustworthy. That is the bond between me and President Muhammadu Buhari, during his life and even after his life.”
The organiser of the Fidau prayer, Nasiru Haladu Danu, who holds the traditional title of Sardaunan Dutse, said the gesture was in line with Buhari’s lifestyle.
Danu said, “Even when he was alive, he wasn’t a materialistic person. All his life, he lived as a level-headed man. As a military officer, a national leader, and as a president for eight years, he served Nigeria with all his heart.”
