The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the tragic killing of the Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED), Mr. Ezekiel Imoleayo Adeniran.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olusola Ayanlade, the Registrar was murdered in the early hours of Thursday, July 17, at Fanibi area in Akure, the state capital.
Naija News understands that the incident has sent shockwaves across the academic community.
Speaking with Channels Television, Ayanlade disclosed that preliminary findings indicated two unidentified men emerged from the bush and attacked the Registrar and another person.
“They reportedly forced a substance into another person’s mouth,” Ayanlade stated, adding that while the nature of the substance has not been confirmed, a post-mortem examination would determine whether it was poisonous.
He said the case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
“We appeal to members of the public who may have useful information that could help track the perpetrators to come forward,” Ayanlade said.
Meanwhile, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Isaac Oluyi, confirmed the Registrar’s death in a statement on Thursday.
He described the incident as “shocking” and said it had thrown the entire university community into deep mourning.
“The Registrar was still at his duty post as of Monday, July 14,” Oluyi recalled.
“His death came as a rude shock to all of us. We are still trying to come to terms with the reality.”
Naija News learnt that Adeniran was appointed the third substantive Registrar of UNIMED on January 6, 2025, and had served diligently until his untimely death on July 17, 2025.
His remains have been deposited at a morgue in a nearby hospital, pending the conclusion of investigations.
While the university has yet to announce official mourning protocols, staff and students are already paying tributes to the late administrator, described as a dedicated, humble, and efficient leader.
The motive behind the gruesome attack remains unknown, as residents and authorities await the outcome of the police investigation.
