List Of Past Nigerian Heads Of State And Presidents Who Are Dead

Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday, July 13, 2025, joined the list of deceased ex-heads of state or presidents.

Naija News reports that Buhari, who would be buried in Daura, Katsina State today (Tuesday), died in a hospital in London after battling with illness.

1. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi (Military Head of State, 1966)

Assumed power after the January 1966 coup, but was overthrown and assassinated during the July 1966 counter‑coup.

2. Murtala Mohammed (Military Head of State, 1975–1976)

Came to power after ousting General Gowon, but was assassinated in a failed coup attempt in February 1976

3. Former President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari

Served 1979–1983; died on 28 December 2018 after a brief illness

4. Sani Abacha (Military Head of State, 1993–1998)

Died of a heart attack in June 1998, ending a highly repressive regime

5. Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe

Served 1963–1966; died on 11 May 1996 at age 91

6. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (President, 2007–2010)

Struck ill and died of pericarditis at Aso Rock Villa in May 2010. He was buried in Katsina following a seven-day national mourning.

Meanwhile, the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari have departed London in the United Kingdom for a state burial in Daura, Katsina State.

Naija News reports that the body of the late president was conveyed on a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft. Upon arrival, he would be buried in Daura.
