Ex-Super Eagles Star, Allen Waobikeze Is Dead

Former Super Eagles winger and domestic football icon, Okwuchukwu ‘Allen’ Waobikeze, has passed away, marking another painful loss for Nigerian football just days after the death of ex-national team captain and goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

Popularly known as Babaoo by fans and teammates, Waobikeze was celebrated for his remarkable left foot, quick feet, and dazzling ball control that lit up stadiums across the country in his prime.

The news of Waobikeze’s death was confirmed on Monday by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, who made the announcement in a heartfelt message shared on Facebook.

While Waobikeze played only a limited number of matches for the Super Eagles due to intense competition for positions, he remained a standout figure in the Nigerian league, earning a cult following during his stints with top-flight clubs such as Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC).

The statement reads, “On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing to eternal glory of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. He transitioned at about 7:34 pm CST.

“We appreciate everyone who prayed, called, and visited my brother Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. Every funeral arrangement will be posted.

“Please keep our family in your prayers at this time as we plan to send forth our beloved brother. God bless you all.”
