The Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, has approved the immediate suspension of top officials at the Katsina State Reformatory Centre, Babbar Ruga, following revelations of torture and gross mishandling of an inmate, Usman Musa, which resulted in the amputation of his left hand.
Naija News reports that the Governor’s action follows the submission of a report by a committee constituted to probe the incident.
A statement issued Friday night by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abdullahi Faskari, confirmed that the Principal of the Centre, Abdulzahir Abubakar; Vice Principal, Bala Abubakar; and a porter, Yunusa Yusuf, have been suspended with immediate effect for their involvement in the maltreatment of the inmate.
Also, a casual staff member, Murtala Suleiman, has been dismissed from service over the same matter.
The statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the SSG, Abdullahi Yar’adua, said the action taken reflects the government’s zero tolerance for human rights abuses and its renewed commitment to institutional reforms.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to upholding the rights and dignity of every citizen. This action reaffirms our resolve to ensure justice and accountability across state institutions,” the statement read.
In a humanitarian move, Governor Radda also approved the sum of ₦970,000 to cover immediate medical expenses of the victim, and an additional ₦35 million for the purchase of a sensor-enabled prosthetic hand to aid his recovery and reintegration.
“This is not only about punishing those responsible but also about restoring hope and dignity to the victim,” the governor said.
The Governor further endorsed key recommendations made by the investigative committee, aimed at upgrading the reformatory centre to international correctional standards.
The committee, led by the Special Adviser on Public Administration and Service Reforms, Alhaji Usman Isiyaku, has been tasked with overseeing the full implementation of these reforms to ensure long-term systemic changes and better welfare for inmates.
