The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped to 44th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, released after the June international window, despite remaining unbeaten in their recent friendly matches.
This slip represents a notable decline for the Super Eagles, the three-time African champions, who had been knocking on the door of the top 40.
The latest rankings show Nigeria behind several African counterparts, a worrying sign ahead of the next phase of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
In their June fixtures, Nigeria edged Ghana 2-1 on May 28, survived a dramatic penalty shootout to defeat Jamaica 5-4 after a 2-2 draw on May 31, and held Russia to a 1-1 draw on June 6.
While the unbeaten run may seem promising on paper, analysts say the team’s inability to close out games convincingly in regular time, especially against lower-ranked opposition, likely contributed to the drop in points.
Nigeria’s current standing sees them trail Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria, among African nations. Morocco remains the highest-ranked team from the continent, sitting in 12th globally. Senegal follows closely in 18th.
Globally, reigning world champions Argentina retain their No. 1 spot, with Spain climbing to second place ahead of France, England, and Brazil, who round out the top five. The rankings continue to reflect a European and South American dominance at the summit of world football.
