Argentine football icon, Ángel Di María, has said his farewell to European football as he begins to wind down his professional career.
In a lengthy post on his Instagram page on Wednesday, Ángel Di María, who has been playing in Europe since 2007, said he has decided to return home.
Recall that in 2007, Portuguese club Benfica paid the sum of €8 million to bring the 37-year-old winger to Europe from Argentine club Rosario Central. From there, he made an A-list move to Real Madrid in 2010 for a transfer fee worth €33 million.
Due to how prolific he proved to be, Manchester United more than doubled the said transfer fee in 2014 to bring him to the Premier League. Unfortunately, his arrival in England didn’t go as planned and he had to join Paris Saint-Germain in 2015 for €63 million.
Di María played for Juventus from 2022 to 2023 before he returned to Benfica where he played for just two seasons. He completed his permanent move to his boyhood club, Rosario Central, on July 1, 2025.
“Today, it’s time to return home, my European career is over. After 18 years in Europe, it’s time to go home,” Di María shared on Instagram on Wednesday, July 2.
“Grateful to Benfica, Real Madrid, Man Utd, PSG, and Juventus. Thanks for the memories, lessons, and friendships.
“I leave fulfilled and proud. Farewell, Europe, what a journey it’s been.”
Note that Ángel Di María won a total of 30 major titles during his time in Europe including five Ligue 1, one Portuguese League, and one Spanish LaLiga.
