The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Muftwang, has dismissed reports suggesting he is set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the claims as false and baseless.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, declaring that he had no intention of abandoning the party that brought him to power.
Naija News reports that Muftwang’s clarification comes amid speculations linking him with other opposition governors who are reportedly considering a move to the APC, following the recent defections of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.
But Governor Muftwang made it clear he is staying put.
“There is no truth in the rumour. I have never contemplated leaving the PDP,” he said.
“The PDP gave me the platform to become governor. I remain loyal to the party and nothing will make me abandon it.”
Reacting with humour to the reports of his alleged move to leave PDP, Muftwang said he first saw the defection claims in a newspaper article sent to him by a friend.
“A friend of mine sent me (the newspaper report) this morning, and I said, ‘There is no prohibition on a hunter pursuing wild animals.’
“I’m sure they see something interesting in us, that is why they want us to join their party. Just as you read it in the newspaper, I also read it,” the Plateau State Governor added.
Naija News reports that a series of internal tensions has emerged within the PDP camp nationwide.
This follows the recent wave of high-profile defections of some governors to the APC. A development that has sparked concerns over the unity of the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Muftwang’s denial is expected to calm tensions within the PDP in Plateau and across the North-Central region, where the party still commands significant support.
