The National Committee for the Oversight and Financial Management of Clubs (DNCG) has announced on Tuesday, June 24, the relegation of Olympique Lyon to Ligue 2 following a final review of the club’s financial records.
The decision comes after months of financial instability at Lyon, which has struggled under the weight of €175 million in debt.
Lyon, a seven-time Ligue 1 champion, has been under strict financial supervision since November 2024, operating with a recruitment freeze unless offset by player sales, tight restrictions on wage spending, and close monitoring of all financial transactions.
The club has the right to appeal the decision, and sources close to the matter say Lyon’s legal team is preparing a response in hopes of overturning the relegation ruling.
However, Tuesday’s announcement marks a significant low point in what has been a turbulent season for the French giants.
Meanwhile, in a high-profile player movement, Ansu Fati is set to join AS Monaco on loan from Barcelona. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move late Tuesday night, stating:
“Ansu Fati to AS Monaco, here we go! Deal in place for Barcelona winger to join the club on loan with buy option.”
Fati, who will undergo his medical later this week, is expected to sign a new contract with Barcelona before temporarily heading to Ligue 1 in a bid to revive his career after injury setbacks and inconsistent form.
The deal reportedly includes a buy option for Monaco, who continue to strengthen their attacking line.
