Rico Lewis nearly made it three late on, smashing a shot off the post in the 88th minute after a weaving run through midfield.
The result sees Manchester City top their group early on, putting them in a strong position to reach the knockout stage.
In the other Group E match, Inter Milan and Monterrey played out a 1-1 draw in Pasadena, with Lautaro Martinez cancelling out Sergio Ramos’ opener.
That means Guardiola’s men now lead the group and need only a draw in their next outing to progress.
