I Had Been Watching Galatasaray Games Because Of Mertens – Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen and Dries Martens

Super Eagles of Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen has credited Dries Martens for being a significant influence in his career.

Victor Osimhen expressed his admiration for Martens, stating that he had been following Galatasaray’s games even before joining the club, all thanks to the 37-year-old Belgian.

The 25-year-old Nigeria striker, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli in September, spoke highly of Mertens, with whom he had a close bond at Napoli before reuniting in Istanbul.

“I had been watching Galatasaray games because of Mertens; he is someone I deeply admire”, Osimhen said according to Tutto Sport.

“Describing him would take a long time. We spent a lot of time together, and he always motivated me with his words. He and his family mean a lot to me.”

Another superstar at the Turkish giants is Argentine footballer Mario Icardi, who plays in the forward position just like Victor Osimhen.

The arrival of Osimhen to Galatasaray was expected to be a problem for the Argentine star, but the club’s coach, Okan Buruk, has been able to manage the players amicably so far.

When asked about his relationship with Icardi at Galatasaray, the Nigeria international said, “Icardi? I’d known him for years before coming to Galatasaray. He is a legend of this club, and I believe I can learn a lot from him. His scoring ability and assists – will be very beneficial for us. The same goes for Batshuayi; we’ll give our best for the team.”

Osimhen has made an impressive start in Turkey, scoring two goals and providing four assists in four games, including a brace in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Kasımpaşa last weekend, with Martens contributing an assist.

Galatasaray are currently concerned about Osimhen’s fitness after he sustained a muscle injury during their 3-3 draw against Kasımpaşa last weekend.
