The Gombe State command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested 111 individuals in relation to recent violent protests in the state.
The arrested individuals were alleged to have assaulted law enforcement personnel, and engaged in vandalism and the theft of both public and private assets.
The force also accused them of being responsible for the unauthorized display of foreign flags during the protest.
Naija News reports that the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Buhari Abdullahi, conveyed this information on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, during a press conference on Thursday.
Abdullahi elaborated on the rising violence within the state, which has led to serious injuries among officers and considerable damage to police vehicles.
He noted that among those arrested, nine individuals were specifically charged with direct involvement in the assaults on police officers and the looting that occurred during the protests.
Significant incidents of vandalism were reported at various locations, including the Gombe State Revenue Recovery Tribunal, Bima Lodge, Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reform, NITEL Company, and Blue-J Motors.
The Police spokesperson emphasized the necessity of maintaining the rule of law, highlighting that such violent actions adversely affect both communities and businesses within the state.
In addition to those apprehended for assaults and looting, authorities have detained 92 individuals in relation to acts of vandalism and theft.
Abdullahi reported that the police had successfully retrieved some of the stolen items, although specific details regarding the extent of these recoveries were not disclosed.
He further noted that on August 5, 2024, ten persons were taken into custody for exhibiting foreign flags during the demonstrations.
ASP Abdullahi characterized this behaviour as a sign of disrespect towards national symbols and classified it as a treasonous act under Nigerian legislation.
The police command reaffirmed its dedication to reestablishing peace, safeguarding lives and property, and upholding the rights of lawful protesters while addressing illegal activities.
Abdullahi also mentioned that CP Usman expressed appreciation for the collaboration of other security agencies and local communities in the recovery of looted assets and the restoration of order within the state.
The command has appealed for tranquillity and encouraged residents to report any missing property to the police headquarters for verification and potential recovery.
