Amnesty International (AI) said over 1000 #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protesters are remanded in prisons and security stations for participating in the hunger protest.
Amnesty International disclosed that at least 632 hunger protesters are remanded in Kano State, while 109 persons are remanded in Sokoto prison for participating in the hunger protest.
The human rights body said federal and state governments failed to address citizens’ concerns but embarked on crackdown on peaceful protesters.
On its X handle, on Wednesday, Amnesty noted, “Instead of addressing people’s concern on the economy, the Nigerian authorities embarked on crackdown. So far, over 1000 people have been remanded over the protest against hunger. At least 632 protesters have been remanded in Kano, while over 109 were remanded in Sokoto prison.”
Amnesty also called on Nigerian authorities to commence investigation into the killing of four persons by security agencies on the first day of the hunger protest.
“The Nigerian authorities must investigate the killing of at least four persons by security operatives on the first day of hunger protest in Maiduguri
“The three fuel attendants died after a security operative on the convoy of an official of Borno State government threw hand grenade at them, while they were having breakfast on 1 August — at their place of work; Kime Filling Station Bolori Junction Maiduguri,” it added.
