2024 Olympics: NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau Insists Super Falcons Can Progress After Two Defeats

Nigeria Football Federation president, Ibrahim Gusau is confident in the Super Falcons’ ability to reach the quarterfinals of the 2024 Olympics Women’s Football Tournament, despite their setbacks in the first two group matches against Brazil and Spain.

Following Super Falcons’ defeat to Spain with Alexia Putellas’ 85th-minute goal, Ibrahim Gasau highlighted the missed scoring opportunities and emphasized the importance of securing a victory against Japan in their last group match to advance to the next round.

Gasau acknowledged the challenges of facing the world champions but remained optimistic about the team’s prospects, emphasizing the need to address the team’s scoring difficulties and expressing faith in the coaching staff’s ability to make necessary adjustments.

He said, “Obviously, we are going to reach the next round of the tournament. The tournament is very tight; we have only two days as a recovery period for them to play the next match. The team’s inability to score goals is a very serious concern.

“As I said earlier, we got a lot of clear chances we could have converted to get the game done. I think the coaches know exactly what they need to do. By the grace of God, let’s see how it goes in the game against Japan.”

With their upcoming match against Japan at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, the pressure is on the Super Falcons to deliver a strong performance, especially considering Japan’s recent impressive win over Brazil.

Even if they manage to beat Japan, Nigeria’s hope of progressing to the next stage relies on Spain defeating Brazil.
