Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed reservations about the Student Loan Scheme of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Naija News reports that Obasanjo while speaking at the inauguration of a building at Bells University’s College of Postgraduate Studies in Ota, Ogun State, urged Tinubu to include students of private universities among the loan scheme’s beneficiaries.
Obasanjo, the proprietor of Bell University of Technology, opined that the loan scheme was crucial to the development of society and the welfare of the citizens and that excluding a group of people would be counterproductive.
The ex-president, however, raised doubts about the scheme running without recording corrupt practices.
He said, “The Vice-Chancellor has spoken about the need to include students in private universities as beneficiaries of the Student Loan Scheme. I urge the government to listen to that and take heed to include them too. I doubt if the scheme will be run without corruption, that is another matter entirely.”
I Am Disappointed Obasanjo, Jonathan Watch PDP Bleed
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has voiced his concerns over the apparent indifference of the party’s founding figures towards the internal conflicts shaking the PDP’s foundations.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” the former Ogun PDP governorship aspirant called out former Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan for their lack of intervention in the party’s longstanding disputes.
The call for action comes amid recent demands by some PDP legislators in the House of Representatives for the resignation of National Chairman Umar Damagum.
These lawmakers, spearheaded by Ikenga UgoChinyere, have accused Damagum of favoring the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and have criticized the party’s leadership for its silence on issues, especially in Rivers State, allowing President Bola Tinubu to step in.
Sowunmi pointed to the “Wike problem” — referencing the challenges posed by Nyesom Wike, the former Rivers State Governor — as a significant factor in the ongoing leadership strife within the PDP.
