World football governing body, FIFA, has said that South Africa could book a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup if they defeat Nigeria in Tuesday’s qualifying clash.
In a post on its official 𝕏 handle, FIFA announced that two countries are on the verge of sealing early qualification.
The post read, “Two more teams could secure @fifaworldcup 26 qualification today! Egypt will qualify if they beat Burkina Faso, while South Africa will qualify if they beat Nigeria, and Benin fail to beat Lesotho.”
South Africa is currently at the top of Group C with 16 points, six clear of the Super Eagles, who are battling to keep their qualification hopes alive.
FIFA is, however, yet to deliver a ruling on South Africa’s decision to field Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho in March, despite the midfielder having accumulated two yellow cards that should have triggered a suspension.
Lesotho have filed a formal protest demanding that South Africa be docked three points and the result overturned to a 3-0 defeat.
In other news, former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, has advised the incumbent manager, Eric Chelle, to fully utilise Ademola Lookman’s set-piece ability and Tolu Arokodare’s physical presence when Nigeria face South Africa in today’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match.
Naija News reports that the Eagles travel to Bloemfontein on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo, where Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Arokodare scored just five minutes after coming off the bench.
That victory kept Nigeria within touching distance of Group C leaders South Africa. A win at the Free State Stadium would cut the deficit to just three points and strengthen their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.
