At least 105 people have been confirmed dead following a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Naija News reported that the incident happened at around 12:30 am on Wednesday, with the tanker said to have fallen, making villagers scoop fuel before the explosion.
The Public Relations Officer of Jigawa State Police Command, Shiisu Adam, in an interview with Punch, said about 55 people sustained various degrees of injuries and were hospitalized at Ringim General Hospital.
He said, “As I am talking to you now, the casualty figure is about 105 and the number of injured is 55 as against the 50 earlier confirmed.”
Adam said the incident occurred at about 11:30 pm on Tuesday night in Majia Town when the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University.
According to him, the tanker left Kano on its way to Nguru town in Yobe State when the tanker driver eventually lost control of the vehicle, and it exploded.

In other news, a devastating fire incident early Wednesday morning along the Ibafo axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has resulted in the destruction of vehicles worth millions of naira, as well as damage to homes and livestock, leaving residents in a state of panic.
The fire was triggered by a petrol tanker that overturned in front of a commercial bank located along the expressway.
Eyewitnesses who spoke with Punch disclosed that the driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel, losing control and causing the tanker to tip over, which subsequently led to a massive explosion.
According to reports, the petrol spill from the overturned tanker flowed through a drainage system, reaching a community approximately one kilometer away from the expressway.
The ensuing inferno had a widespread impact, shattering windows, damaging roofs, and cracking walls of several nearby buildings.
The incident has also left several individuals with varying degrees of injuries, prompting emergency services to rush to the scene for rescue and treatment.
Speaking with Punch, an eyewitness identified as Wasiu said the tanker driver’s reckless driving was to blame for the incident.
